The Hawthorn Tea Room is continuing its tea education classes with a twist!  For 2010, the tea topics will be inspired by the titles of the Tea Shop Mystery series by Laura Childs.  This is not a book club and reading the books will not be a requirement.  However, we will have the books for sale in the tea room and would be happy to start a book club if there is interest in forming one.  If you are not familiar with the books, there are recipes in the back for yummy tea food items featured in the stories.  Cathy will be putting her spin on these recipes to create a light luncheon tea menu for us to enjoy as we sip and learn about the tea topics on which Michael will be putting his spin!

The cost of these classes is $20 plus tax, includes a light luncheon, plentiful tea, and fun-filled learning!  Seating is limited so please register early.  Classes may be subject to cancellation due to lack of registrants.

Michael is offering an additional series of classes starting at noon on the same dates as our 2:00 tea classes. Please visit his website for more details and to register:

Shades of Earl Grey
Inspired by the third book in Laura Childs' tea shop mysteries, we will look at (and taste!) all kinds of Earl Grey. The English Breakfast Murder

Laura Childs' fourth tea shop mystery refers to English Breakfast, so we'll take our inspiration from all of the blenders who make the many blended black teas on the market called "English Breakfast."  Learn a bit of the tea blender's art and try your hand at making your own breakfast tea recipe!

Chamomile Mourning

Inspired by the sixth book in Laura Childs' tea shop mystery series, we'll extend our previous tea-blending class and strike out into the addition of flavoring, scenting, botanicals, and other additions to tea.  We will taste a wide range of teas and tea blending ingredients, learn how the best (and the worst) scented teas are made, and enjoy food inspired by the book as well!

Sunday, July 25th

Blood Orange Brewing

Taking a cue from Laura Childs' seventh "tea shop mystery," this class covers brewing.  Learn different styles of brewing, the teaware that developed around the styles, and the "Tea Brewing Trinity"--three primary variables that go into brewing a good cup of tea!

Dragonwell Dead

We wrap up the Tea Shop Mystery series with a topic from the eighth of Laura Childs' books:  Dragonwell, the most famous of China's green teas.  Taste Dragonwell of different grades and from different sources, learn where it comes from, the astronomical prices it can sell for, and even learn its Chinese name!

About the Presenter:

Michael J. Coffey can be described with a quote from Samuel Johnson:
"A hardened and shameless tea drinker, who has for twenty years diluted his meals with only the infusion of this fascinating plant..." Michael started taking tea in the British tradition after a vacation in England.  After receiving a Chinese-style tea set from a Taiwanese friend, he took his first formal tea class in 1994.  He has been sharing his love of the history, culture, geography, art, and science of tea in his own tea classes since 2003.  He founded Tea Geek in 2006 to provide accurate and well-researched information on tea.  Tea education programs include public speaking, classes and seminars for tea businesses and other groups, online classes at
www.teageek.net, and more.  Tea Geek has a membership program and provides answers and research for tricky tea questions.
